About Fern Yip
From her wild journeys, Fern knows that deep nature connection is essential to living both soulfully and meaningfully on this earth. She finds immense joy in encouraging youth to find their own naturalist passions and meaningful relationships to the earth by awakening curiosity, authenticity, and play. She brings a naturalist’s keen awareness, a passion for earth-based skills, and seven years of experience mentoring at outdoor education and nature schools.
She is currently a nature mentor for youth ages 6-15 at three different nature schools on Salt Spring Island (WOLF teen program with Wisdom of the Earth and CAHOOTS outdoor nature program) and in Saanich (Thriving Roots Wilderness School) which all use the 8 shields model for nature connection. She also instructs adults in the ways of rewilding through a program called Wild and Alive at Thriving Roots Wilderness School. She is a graduate of the Wisdom of the Earth 8 shields apprenticeship program and holds a BA in environmental studies from Quest University Canada, a certificate in herbal medicine from the California School of Herbal Studies, is a certified Wilderness First Responder, and will be graduating from the University of Victoria’s Restoration of Natural Systems diploma program in the Spring of 2021.
Fern enjoys many earth-based skills but has a particular love for botany, making herbal medicine, tracking, and tanning hides. She also has a commitment to tending the land through the practice of ecological restoration. Compelled by the vision of creating thriving intergenerational communities based in nature connection, Fern is excited for her upcoming move to Pemberton in the summer 2021 where she would like to continue to offer nature connection programs.
